The Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) is one of the five regional commissions of the United Nations. The ECLAC Human Resources Section internship is for 2-6 months with an opportunity for extension, depending on the needs of the department. Candidates may be selected throughout the posting period, on an 'as-needed' basis.
The internship is UNPAID and full-time.
Interns work for five days per week (35 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned.
Responsibilities
Under the general guidance of the Chief of the Human Resources Section and the direct supervision of the Human Resources Officers, the intern will assist in implementing various initiatives in collaboration with the Recruitment, Staff Administration and Training Units.
1) Recruitment
(a) International Promotion (three-week project)
Prepare a promotion strategy for 2012, including:
Identify Job Fairs/Exhibitions about international careers in order to increase the geographical representation of some countries in the region (i.e. Antigua, Brazil, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Grenada, Mexico, Nicaragua, Paraguay, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent, Uruguay);
Identify events/meetings/forums related to professional women in order to increase female representation;
Draft and prepare a list of contacts with Universities/Associations/NGOs in the region to advertise our vacancies;
Design a booklet on Careers at the ECLAC to inform students, graduates and young workers, using the new 'UN branding'.
(b) Shortlisting questionnaires (two-week project)
Download the 'Pre-screening questions' available on Inspira (i.e. the UN Talent Management System);
Conceive (with the Division Managers and Committee Members) new questions, more specifically related to the work of the ECLAC, to complete Inspira database.
2) Staff Administration and Performance Management
Hold briefing/information sessions;
Standardization/automation of HRS forms, updating of our SOPs;
Development of a concise HR manual for ECLAC Senior Management;
Implementation of the exercise on the conversion to continuing appointment expected in the Fall 2012.
3) Learning/Training Activities
(a) Provide support to Training Unit – Regular Language classes
Install and check equipments for the classes;
Verify the availability of rooms for every class;
Provide assistance to teachers to prepare the material for language classes;
Provide assistance in keeping record of the attendance of the regular language classes;
Respond to queries by phone or e-mails to students as required;
Assist Assistant with electronic data entry in IMIS and end of Month Summaries for the training classes.
(b) Provide support to Training Unit – Training courses in ECLAC and outside the premises
Organize and deliver the material required for the courses;
Set up the equipments in the rooms and install software as required;
In the case of courses outside ECLAC, prepare the equipments and materials that must be carried to the place of the event;
Set up the equipments and deliver materials for the courses;
Keep information filed and updated available;
During the absence of the Training Assistant schedule videoconference, request rooms for training and prepare the material necessary for the session.
(c) Provide Support during exam periods: Language final course exams/YPP (Young Professionals Programme)
Check that the audio equipments work properly;
Assist in the supervision of staff members/participants sitting the exams.

Education
Applicants must be enrolled in a degree programme in a graduate school (second university degree or higher) in the areas of human resources management or public administration or business administration;
or if pursuing their studies in countries where higher education is not divided into undergraduate and graduate stages, have completed at least four years of full-time studies at a university or equivalent institution towards the completion of a degree.
Be computer literate in standard software applications;
Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; and
Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.
Work Experience
Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the programme.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
Advanced knowledge of Spanish (both oral and written) is required for the Internship Programme. Intermediate knowledge of English is required.
Knowledge of another official UN language is an asset.
