Background:
The British Embassy in Washington, DC is
seeking an Administrative and Research and Assistant to join the Science &
Innovation Team in the Global Issues Group (GIG). GIG acts as the fulcrum between UK and US
policy makers on a wide range of issues at both Federal and State level. The Science & Innovation Team’s main
objective is to provide strategic advice to the UK government across the full range
of US science, technology, and innovation issues, including areas such the life
and physical sciences, innovation policy, and interdisciplinary research to
increase UK-US collaboration on these issues.
This work supports the UK in meeting its own national and international
objectives by promoting UK-US research collaboration, and reporting on
important policy developments in the US.
This is an important administrative and
research assistant position within the team. The job-holder will be enthusiastic
about assisting with implementation of UK interests across the US network. The
successful candidate will ideally have a personal interest in science,
technology, and innovation issues.
Duties and Responsibilities:
-Provide administrative support to the
various teams in the Global Issues Group, including tasks such as managing
contact databases and planning events, stocking supplies, finance assistance,
managing records, scheduling meetings and preparing initial drafts of letters
-Conduct research for the Science &
Innovation team including relevant background for meetings, visitor programs,
and reporting requests.
-Track science-related news, events and
developments on specific research topics; brief team members and London
stakeholders on results.
-Take notes at hearings/briefings on
Capitol Hill.
-Build and maintain good working
relationships with S&I Officers in other Consulates, and assist with
stakeholder management and reimbursements for projects.
-Provide administrative support to the
S&I team, especially the Head of S&I, including scheduling meetings and
travel for team members, maintaining the S&I contact database, and
assisting with visitors as needed.
-Act as primary liaison to the Information Systems
Services group on troubleshooting IT issues for the department
Minimum Qualifications:
-Excellent phone and internet research
skills, including ability to think creatively, problem solve, and seek out
answers proactively.
-Organizational and interpersonal skills,
together with an ability to work well with others on a wide range of issues.
-Clear and concise oral and written skills.
-Flexibility in a team setting, with an
enthusiastic approach to work.
-Ability to work independently, and
efficiently complete administrative tasks.
Desirable Qualifications:
-Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant field such
as science or environmental issues, policy/politics, or international relations
or 1 or more years of professional work experience.
-Interest in science, environment and/or
innovation policy.
-Knowledge or interest in US and UK policy
strengths and priorities.
-Strong IT skills
Under US State Department requirements, the
Embassy may only employ, as non-diplomatic staff, persons who are US citizens,
US Green Card holders or A visa holders*. If you hold a visa other than an A
visa you are not currently eligible to work at the Embassy. Please refer to our website for information

checks and security clearance.
*A visas are acceptable at the Embassy and
Consulates. The UK Mission to the UN
(UKMIS) accepts G visas, and British Defence Staff (BDS) outposts accept A or
NATO visas.

The target salary for this position is
$30,000 annualized. Salary will be confirmed upon offer of employment.
