The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the United Nations systems designated entity for addressing environmental issues at the global and regional level. Its mandate is to coordinate the development of environmental policy consensus by keeping the global environment under review and bringing emerging issues to the attention of governments and the international community for action. The overall objective of the UNEP’s Division of Technology, Industry and Economics (DTIE) is to encourage decision makers in government, local authorities and industry to develop and adopt policies, strategies and practices and technologies that promote sustainable patterns of consumption and production, make efficient use of natural resources, ensure safe management of chemicals and contribute to making trade and environment policies mutually supportive. It promotes the development, use and transfer of policies, technologies, economic instruments, managerial practices and other tools that assist in environmentally sound decision making and the building of corresponding activities. This post is located in UNEP/DTIE at the Paris duty station. Under the supervision of Head of the Business and Industry Unit and the overall supervision of the Chief of the Sustainable Consumption and Production Branch. The incumbent will perform the following functions:
      
Responsibilities
      
1.Contribute to the development and implementation of the safer and responsible production programme activities and related projects including the promotion of Flexible Framework for Chemical Accident Prevention and Preparedness and the responsible production programmes within the context of the Resource Efficiency and Harmful Substances and Hazardous Waste sub-programme.  2. Contribute to the combined capacity building delivery and industrial application support in resource efficiency and responsible production approaches in Small Micro Enterprises in developing and transition economies under the wider scope of the Joint UNEP/United Nations Industrial Development Organisation Programme for Resource Efficient and Cleaner Production programme (RECP).
3. Provide substantive support to the development and implementation of UNEP’s programme on industrial risk reduction and emergency preparedness through Awareness and Preparedness for Emergencies at Local Level (APELL) within the context of Resource Efficiency and Conflicts and Disasters subprogrammes of UNEP.  4. Provide substantive technical inputs on resource efficient safer and responsible production to forums and processes organized by other partners, including on-going cooperation activities being promoted jointly by UNEP under the scope of (i) the UNEP/UNIDO Resource Efficient and Cleaner Production (RECP) programme, (ii) the Regional Round tables on Sustainable Consumption and Production organized by the respective regional secretariats, (iii) the OECD Working Group on Chemical Accidents, (v) activities promoted by the EC JRC Major Accident Hazards Bureau (MAHB) and (v) relevant activities promoted by the International Council of Chemical Associations (ICCA) as per the cooperation framework agreed between UNEP and ICCA.

Education
      
Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in industrial engineering or chemical engineering or related area. A first level university degree in combination with qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
       
Work Experience
      
A minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in programme/project management in a field related to environmental management in industrial systems is required.
      
Languages
      
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in oral and written English is required. Working knowledge of French is desirable, knowledge of another UN official language is an advantage.
  
Assessment Method
      
Evaluation of qualified candidates for this position may include a substantive assessment which may be followed by a competency-based interview.
