TITLE: U.S. Managing Director
Location: United States (San Francisco or Boston 8.5-10.5 months/year and Yirimadjo, Mali 1.5 - 3.5 months/year

ORGANIZATIONAL PROFILE:

Project Muso Ladamunen (PML) is a rapidly growing non-profit organization that operates in Mali, one of the world's poorest countries. Partnering with the Malian Ministry of Health, Partners In Health, Tostan, and others, PML brings together health care delivery, non-formal education, microfinance,
and community action to address the root causes of disease. Since 2008, PML and the Malian Ministry of Health have been testing a scalable model health system for improving child health and survival. Through action, research, and advocacy, PML works with communities in Mali to stop cycles of poverty and disease, and create cycles of health and wellbeing in their place. POSITION DESCRIPTION:

The U.S. Managing Director leads the team's efforts to articulate Project Muso's vision and mobilize the partnerships and financial resources necessary to realize that vision. Project Muso is in the midst of piloting its model in Yirimadjo, Mali, an area of 60,000 people on the outskirts of Bamako. With groundbreaking results from the first three years of its pilot, Project Muso is planning toward strategic scale-up and replication in the years to come. The U.S. Managing Director plays a central role in guiding and catalyzing Project Muso's growth, organizational maturation, and development at this critical juncture for the organization and the thousands of community partners we serve. The Director's primary responsibilities will be to create and implement a development plan for the organization, and to build the capacity of the Board of Directors to govern and develop the organization. The Director will also support the Finance Director and the International Managing Director to strengthen financial management systems and will play a leading role aligning strategic plans and budgeting with actual and projected assets.

The Director will be based primarily in the US (preferably in San Francisco or Boston), as well as 1.5-3.5 months/year at Project Muso's site in Mali. The US Managing Director collaborates closely with the International Managing Director, who is based primarily in Mali (90-95%), with some time in the US (5-10%). The full-time position requires a commitment and passion for social justice work, proven fundraising experience, and the capacity to take on new and unexpected challenges while providing consistent, strategic leadership. We are looking for a team player, a creative thinker, an outstanding communicator, and a self-starter. French skills and experience in resource-poor settings are preferred but not required.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:


  •     Positioning Project Muso for growth by designing a development/fundraising strategy. (5%)
  •     Cultivating and growing relationships with current and prospective major donors. (20%).
  •     Managing and leading grant development and submission. Overseeing maintenance of grantseeking and fundraising schedules, objectives, databases and tracking systems, and ensuring effective tracking, timely recognition, reporting, and appropriate communication with all supporters. Contributing original writing and editing to grants, proposals, and reports and managing volunteers and staff to assist with these activities. (20%)
  •     Supporting volunteers, supporters and board members in planning and implementing grassroots fundraising events. (5%)
  •     Building the capacity of the US Board of Directors and the UK Board of Trustees. This includes strengthening board structures, engaging and empowering current board members, and playing a leading role in identifying and recruiting new board members. (10%)
  •     Designing and implementing a plan for external communication that positions Project Muso for growth. Leading a dynamic organization-wide effort to refine the articulation of Project Muso's narrative and niche. Creating and maintaining high quality, up-to-date external communications, including producing materials such as annual reports, brochures, presentations, website updates, donor and partnership reports, and social media. Contributing original writing to communications materials, and managing volunteers, staff, and consultants to assist with these activities. Developing and implementing a communications strategy that cultivates involvement of small-scale contributors and supporters, utilizing direct contact, events, and social media. (20%)
  •     Managing US-based operations including finance, human resources/recruiting, donation acknowledgment and management, and volunteer management. Strengthening, and where necessary revising, existing organizational structures and administrative protocols to ensure effective team communication, morale, workflow, reporting relationships, and continuous quality improvement. Serving as the primary point of contact between Project Muso's US and Mali based teams. (10%)
  •     Overseeing fiduciary needs of the organization, including ensuring fiscal transparency, checks and balances, and supervising financial management as led by the Financial Director (US based) in coordination with the Accounting Manager (Mali based). Ensuring alignment of the development plan with the strategic plan and visa versa, aligning projected budgets and projected revenue. (5%)
  •     Representing Project Muso at meetings, events, conferences, and other public venues. Developing thought leadership around specific topics/emerging practice areas. Sharing in knowledge dissemination, reporting, and communications. Coordinating relationships with key partner organizations in the global health delivery community to enhance opportunities for collaboration. (5%)
