EXTENDED CASE MANAGEMENT ASSISTANT INTERN
This is an unpaid internship.
PURPOSE: This year, the IRC Baltimore Regional Office will be providing Extended Services to more than 100 households from about 25 different countries. IRC's Extended Services Program provides support and case management services to refugees and asylees who have been in the US from 8 months to 5 years. Services include, but are not limited to, assistance with crisis intervention/management, benefits/public assistance, legal/court issues, employment and education issues, child welfare issues, including family violence issues, mental health/medical issues, financial issues, immigration issues, and women's empowerment issues.
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
- The Extended Case Management Intern will assist the Extended Case Manager and refugees with the following tasks:
- Accompanying and advocating for clients at Department of Social Services offices, Social Security Administration offices, Legal Aid office, Housing and Energy Assistance offices.
- Assisting clients with applications for public assistance
- Assisting clients with making appointments and accessing medical/mental health services
- Distributing donations to families in need
- Providing information to clients about community resources/events
- Assisting families with school registration and enrollment in after-school programs
- General administrative tasks, including maintaining evaluation system
- Supporting clients with long-term planning and goal setting with families
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Reliable and flexible
- Excellent communication and writing skills
- Organized with attention to detail
- Able to work independently and under pressure in a fast-paced environment
- An interest in international and refugee issues
- Creativity and initiative to follow through on projects
- Strong desire to help people and enthusiasm for working in a multi-cultural setting
- Computer literacy - preferably with PC systems
- A car and valid driver's license is required.
TIME COMMITMENT:
Fall and Spring interns are required to work at least 10-15 hours per week, Monday through Friday, for a minimum of 12 weeks in the Fall and Spring
Summer interns are required to work at least 25 hours per week, Monday through Friday, for the entire summer
