Organizational Setting and Reporting

This post is located in the Electrical Operations and Maintenance Shop of the Mechanical, Electrical and Plumbing Unit (MEPU), Plant Engineering Section (PES), Facilities Management Service (FMS), Facilities and Commercial Services Division (FCSD), Office of Central Support Services (OCSS), Department of Management. The incumbent reports to the Foreman and the Lead Mechanic of the Electrical Operations and Maintenance Shop, MEPU.

Responsibilities

Under the overall guidance of the Foreman of the Electrical Operations and Maintenance Shop, MEPU/PES, and the direct supervision of the Lead Mechanic of the Electrical Operations and Maintenance Shop, the Journeyman shall perform the following duties and responsibilities: install, maintain, and repair electrical and other related systems at the United Nations Headquarters Complex; ensure that all such electrical installations/works meet safety standards in accordance with the National Electrical Code (NEC) and New York City (NYC) building codes, norms and regulations; inspect and report problems; provide solutions when electrical installations or power supply systems are defective or malfunctioning; perform routine, scheduled, and preventive maintenance works; perform emergency repairs as required; troubleshoot causes for malfunctions or breakdowns; estimate electrical loads in accordance with the power demands of equipment and determine electrical supply to ensure reliability and safety of use for them; inspect the work of trade assistants; report and execute corrective actions to secure satisfactory standards and timely completion of works; execute work procedures and schedules by effectively and efficiently utilizing materials, labour, and equipment; conduct scheduled inspections to detect short circuits and electrical malfunctions; report electrical faults and submit regular maintenance reports to supervisors; assist in the maintenance of inventory records of all equipment, tools, spare parts, materials, and maintenance activities; assist in checking levels of stocks regularly and recommend placing orders for spare parts; assist supervisors in evaluating the performance of staff and contractors, and perform other duties as required.

Education
    The candidate must have a high school diploma, or has a GED or a relevant Technical Diploma obtained either from a Technical College, Trade or Vocational Training School.

Work Experience

  •     The incumbent must have some years of progressively responsible experience in the trade in a reputable company or electrical organization including at least 3 years of relevant practical work experience in installing, servicing, maintaining and repairing electrical equipment and installations, including familiarity with generator installations, trouble shooting and control wiring.
  •     An apprenticeship experience of working under a licensed Electrician is desirable.

Languages

    English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
    For this post, fluency in oral and written English is required.
    Knowledge of other official UN language is an advantage.

Assessment Method

    Evaluation of qualified candidates may include a written technical test which may be followed by a competency-based interview.
