Overview

The World Resources Institute (WRI) seeks a results-oriented, innovation-minded, and self-motivated individual with excellent skills at managing 'big data' to advance environmental conservation and sustainable development. The position is full-time and will be responsible for leading and building a small team that will provide the technical foundation for data-intensive initiatives within the People & Ecosystems Program, beginning with Global Forest Watch 2.0.

Responsibilities

  •     Develop information technology systems, software applications, online systems, ICT tools, and more that advance environmental conservation and sustainable development.
  •     Recruit and build the capacity of data lab with regard to software development, distributed data analysis and management, data display, and more.
  •     Apply these developments, and the team, to initially contribute to Global Forest Watch 2.0. As development advances and funding becomes available, collaborate with other projects within the program (and beyond) where cutting-edge information technology and big data are relevant.
  •     Assist with outreach and communication efforts to promote technological developments, systems, applications, and results. Target audiences include policy makers, civil society, companies, and research institutions.
  •     Contribute content to fund-raising applications and join in funder conversations when appropriate.

Qualifications

  •     Advanced degree in mathematics, quantitative economics, software engineering, or other relevant field.
  •     Demonstrated experience with software engineering and managing 'big data' to advance environmental conservation.
  •     Demonstrated ability to lead cutting-edge application of information technology, algorithms, and more. Applications for forest conservation would be a plus.
  •     Strong dedication to creativity and innovation.
  •     Solid analytical skills with a strong quantitative background.
  •     At least three years of experience as a Software Architect or Principal Developer.
  •     Experience programming in both functional and scripting languages in a professional environment.
  •     Experience with open source technologies to wrangle big data (Hadoop, Cascalog, Pig, Hive, etc.).
  •     Proficient at writing technical documentation and coding based on service oriented design principles.
  •     Development experience on multiple operating systems (Linux, Windows, OSX).
  •     Ability to lead a group to technical experts to develop new applications while working within a larger team of complementary skills and competencies.
  •     Strong English writing skills.
  •     Willingness to travel (up to about 15 percent of the time).
