The Advisor, Newborn Health, Technical Leadership & Support is responsible for providing technical and program expertise to help implement Saving Newborn Lives’ (SNL) strategic direction, guide the development of country-level strategies and plans, and ensure the technical integrity of SNL global newborn health program. The incumbent will be a member of the SNL 3 Home Office Technical Support Team that provides leadership, guidance, and management on technical matters related to newborn health programming and policy, including program development, introduction of newborn interventions into health systems and community action, monitoring and evaluation, program learning and documentation, program-based research, and dissemination and sharing of key results and learning. S/he will provide technical inputs and advice in support of SNL’s objectives related to scale-up and reducing neonatal mortality. The incumbent will also participate in coordination and collaboration with other key stakeholders in newborn health including research institutions, professional associations and academic entities, international development partners, and host country governments. S/he will also provide technical assistance and support to ensure that state-of-the-art newborn survival and health evidence is brought to bear within Save the Children International’s global health programs. It is expected that the incumbent will be an experienced public health physician with relevant developing country experience, preferably in Asia and Africa.

Responsibilities


  • Provides hands-on technical assistance to SNL-assisted countries in strategy and program development, focusing on technical content and approaches that lead to increased coverage, use, and quality of high impact newborn health interventions at scale.
  • Provides technical assistance in identifying, planning, implementing and evaluating introduction of innovative technologies and delivery approaches to increase newborn survival and health impact at scale.  Through hands-on  assistance, strengthen the MNH technical and programming capacity of SNL-assisted country teams and key partners.
  • Participate in development of SNL’s global and country-level program-based research agendas in collaboration with partners, donors and other key stakeholders, especially in relation to the identification and resolution of critical implementation barriers to scale-up of high impact newborn health services and practices.
  • Provides technical inputs and oversight for research activities; including technical and ethical review of research proposals as required, technical monitoring of research implementation, including research design and protocol, conducting site visits, and participating in or reviewing analysis approaches, conclusions, and publications.
  • Provides technical expertise in policy, program, and research  dialogue with selected international organizations and host-country counterparts, and in technical discussions and collaboration with key stakeholders and partners engaged in newborn health.
  • Assists the SNL Monitoring and Evaluation Team and other SNL staff in designing, implementing, and synthesizing the findings of annual program reviews.
  • Assists the Advocacy, Communication, and Knowledge Management Team in identifying important technical content for dissemination activities, and helps ensure the technical integrity and accurateness of information, publications and reports produced by SNL. Utilizes research results to inform and influence key stakeholders and partners on important technical and policy issues affecting newborn health.
  • Provides technical expertise within the Save the Children/U.S, and in support of Save the Children International’s Global Health and Nutrition Initiative on technical approaches and content related to newborn health (e.g., newborn health in humanitarian emergencies). Assists, as appropriate (e.g., Program Learning Group, webinars, proposal development, etc.) in building SCI global capacity in newborn health

Requirements

  • Medical degree or other appropriate clinical background, preferably with experience in pediatrics and/or newborn health
  • MPH or equivalent required
  • At least 5 years’ experience working in a developing country, preferably in Africa or Asia, on health programs
  • Experience working in maternal/newborn/child health (MNCH) programs strongly preferred.
  • Experience in applying technical expertise for advocacy and in using results to inform programming.
  • Ability to develop new approaches and apply best practices.
  • Recognized technical expertise in MNCH (including if possible experience such as participating in global networks and forums, making technical presentations, and peer-reviewed publications) highly desired
  • Experience in public health research, and ability to think critically and strategically.
  • Excellent writing and communication skills in English required; experienced in preparing and presenting compelling presentations
  • Ability to travel up to 30 percent time, both domestically and internationally.
