The Position
This senior executive position will be responsible for
managing the functional areas of resource development and outreach,
communications and external relations, and support the Programs team on
government agency relations. S/he will have a good understanding of international
development and an ability to leverage resources and partnerships to advance
AKF U.S.A. goals. The overall goal of the Director will be to help maximize
flow of financial and intellectual resources to the AKDN from private and
corporate sources and support the Programs team in premier development
discourse relationships with governments and other international development
agencies in the US and thereby augmenting resources from government agencies
and large foundations. A key objective will be to strengthen the work being
done to establish the Foundation's volunteer network across the country to help
the resource mobilization agenda. S/he will be equally comfortable envisioning,
analyzing and executing products and programs that are demand-driven and have the
ability to match it with donor/partner requirements.
The successful candidate will work with the CEO, a national
advisory board, and the other two senior Directors for Programs and Finance to
augment existing plans and implement a comprehensive Communications and
Resource Development Plan, including: planning and executing fundraising
strategies, and identifying, cultivating and soliciting corporate support, with
respective targets established and measured on an annual basis for resource
flow to AKF U.S.A. Annual multi-million non-governmental resource mobilization
targets will be established, for which the Director will be responsible. This
position reports directly to the CEO.
PRIMARY DUTIES AND
RESPONSIBILITIES
Strategic
Augment the five year strategy for strengthening
communications and resource development for AKF U.S.A. within the first six
months of the assignment. The strategy will continue to be embedded within the
overall vision and directions being set for AKF USA
Provide leadership and management of all communications and
resource development work currently executed by the relevant teams (e.g. ,
volunteer-run programs, such as the Partnership Walk, Partnership Golf and
other fundraising and awareness campaigns, annual report production, donor letters,
etc.) ensuring high productivity of the team.
Identify, nurture, and bring closure on new multi-year
donations from corporate donors.
Lead in the development and strengthening of online
fundraising and communication processes and tools including joining up with
other AKF Units (in UK, Canada, the developing countries) to produce materials
for multiple Foundation offices.
Support the Programs team in their efforts to develop
relationships with key government and development agencies, preparing quality
communications material that might augment proposals to agencies or help in
reporting successes of programs.
Support the impact investment team to extend a wider net of
potential collaborators for AKDN work internationally
Management
Lead, oversee, control and integrate across regions all
aspects of Partnerships Inaction program management, including quality control,
financial and budget oversight, human resource development, performance
management, event planning, site preparation, logistics, legal/regulatory
requirements, etc.
Ensure that all communications material is of the highest
standards established by AKF and liaise with colleagues in other AKF units to
enhance overall impact of AKF communications internationally.
Lead the development of on-going relationships with key
national and regional media outlets that result in an increased positive
representation of AKDN programs and events.
Coordinate and strengthen the work of regional volunteer
teams to develop new fundraising and outreach campaigns and ideas and
formulation of teams for future events. This will include orientation and
training of an ever-changing volunteer force.
Ensure that there is an efficient flow of information up and
down the chain of activities. This may involve travel to field sites with
volunteers.
Strengthen staff performance management with clear
responsibilities and regularly reviewed objectives, resulting in well motivated
staff with good work-life balance.
This should also extend to a system of performance management
of volunteer teams, aid volunteer recruitment and retention, and include a
database on volunteer rosters, profiles, and activities.
Provide regular analytical reports on the performance of the
Communications and Resource Development block of AKF USA work.
Cultivate a collegial management at the Director-level
working to create a greater degree of team management at the Director-level.
The Requirements
The ideal candidate will have excellent leadership,
organizational and interpersonal skills, be highly creative and able to
overcome obstacles to cooperation and to foster harmonious relations. Proven
communications, development education, volunteer management, private and
corporate fund-raising, relationship building with opinion leaders skills are
required. Must evidence a high level of achievements in at least 3 out of 5 of
these listed skills and a good awareness of the other two functional areas. A
master's degree in a relevant area of the work is highly desirable but more
weight will be placed on the actual track record of achievements. Minimum 8-10
years of verifiable experience and results, including at least $5 million
raised annually in private sector fundraising with a mid-sized or major
non-profit, preferably one focused on international development.
