OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAMME :

In order to contribute to the reduction of communicable and non-communicable disease morbidity and mortality in the WHO African Region, the Integrated Disease Surveillance (IDS) Program supports Member States in scaling up the implementation and monitoring of the Integrated Disease Surveillance and Response Strategy and the International Health Regulations, and strengthening capacity in public health laboratory diagnosis and networking.

Description of duties:
·         Facilitate the development of norms, standards, policies, plans, guidelines and other laboratory tools for the laboratory performance in line with IDSR and IHR;
·         Support the enhancement and expansion of regional laboratory networks for disease surveillance and response of IDSR priority diseases, conditions and events in the Region;
·         Contribute to the establishment and sustainability of the network of Centres of excellence in the Region;
·         Coordinate laboratory training courses and regional or sub regional meetings on public health laboratory networks and WHO's global alert and response activities;
·         Provide guidance to Member States to monitor antimicrobial resistance;
·         Coordinate support to Member States in strengthening biosafety and biosecurity including proper handling of specimens with the aim of improving country's capacity and capability in the area of bio-risk reduction and containment of highly infectious pathogens;
·         Coordinate quality assurance activities including proficiency testing of network laboratories;
·         Monitor and evaluate laboratory services with targets and measurable indicators;
·         Promote collaboration between public and animal health laboratories in accordance with One Health approach;
·         Perform any other duties that may be assigned by the supervisors.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Education:
Essential: Degree in medicine from a recognised institution with post graduate degree in microbiology or bacteriology or virology or related laboratory speciality.

Desirable: University degree or diploma in Public Health or Epidemiology.


Skills:
·         Technical expertise and experience in microbiology or bacteriology or virology;
·         Ability to work effectively with colleagues at national and international level;
·         Excellent knowledge of laboratory management;
·         Previous experience in field epidemiology related activities would be an advantage;
·         Good writing skills.
·         Computer literate.
Experience:
Essential: At least 10 years of professional experience in laboratory management, evaluation, planning and training.
Desirable: Experience in disease surveillance, prevention and control at national and or international level. Experience in WHO or the UN system is an advantage.
Languages:
Excellent knowledge of English and or French with a good writing knowledge of the other. Knowledge of Portuguese would be an asset.
Annual salary: (Net of tax)
USD 80734 at single rate
USD 86904 with primary dependants      Post Adjustment: 65.3 % of the above figure(s). This percentage is to be considered as indicative since variations may occur each month either upwards or downwards due to currency exchange rate fluctuations or inflation.
