POSITION SUMMARY:
*Grant funded.
Under the direct supervision of the Director, Strategies and Partnerships, the Senior Communications Manager is responsible for developing and implementing media and communications strategies that produce measurable results in both traditional and online media outlets. The manager will work closely with ICAP headquarter and field offices and as relevant MSPH and other CU communications departments.
MAJOR ACCOUNTABILITIES:
- Develop and maintain an ICAP communications work plan focused on the highest priority communications-related projects and activities.
- Develop and oversee communications, media and visibility efforts across ICAP.
- Develops key messages for program, policy, and advocacy initiatives.
- Support other ICAP staff to plan and implement communications activities, as needed.
- Provides on-going strategic media counsel and act as a resource to and support ICAP field offices as they develop local communications strategies, including printed materials.
- Conducts internal communication training for ICAP staff.
- Edit and maintain the ICAP website, including the following:
- Engage in regular review and update of content.
- Ensure that all content is properly written and is consistent with the ICAP branding guidelines.
Manage blog content and schedule.
- Write and edits news, event listings, profiles and initiatives, edit photos and photo galleries.
- Manage ICAP’s media relations and its various social networks.
- Work with appropriate senior staff to responds to media requests in a timely manner; helps shape proposed story ideas, directing media to appropriate ICAP senior staff to advance a story or concept.
- Assist and/or lead the design, editing and dissemination of print and electronic communications to support and promote the work of ICAP (eg monthly newsletters, presentations).
- Coordinate the planning and design of ICAP-sponsored events and provide on-site communications and logistical support to ensure their success.
- Establish and maintain effective working collaborations with the MSPH Office of Communications, and liaise with Office staff, as needed, to publicize major events, generate press releases or to work on other complex projects and activities.
Perform other related duties supportive of ICAP’s mission and vision, as assigned.
TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS:
Limited domestic and international travel is expected.
EDUCATION:
Bachelor’s Degree in public health, journalism, communications, public relations or equivalent field. Master’s degree preferred.
EXPERIENCE, SKILLS & MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Minimum 5+ years’ experience in health-focused journalism, media relations, or public relations.
- Experience with HIV/AIDS and/or global health and development policy issues.
- Demonstrated experience in multi-tasking across multiple disciplines, meeting deadlines under pressure, and working well with peers and senior management.
- Comprehensive knowledge of media operations, including print, broadcast, online, and social media.
- Existing relationships with key medical, scientific, policy, and general media.
- Excellent writing, editing, presentation, and copy editing skills.
- Ability to take initiative and use strategic thinking and problem-solving skills.
- Strong organizational and analytical abilities.
- Strong interpersonal skills and demonstrated experience working independently as well as in a team environment
- Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite (specifically PowerPoint and Excel) and communications-related programs such as Quark, InDesign, Adobe Illustrator, Dreamweaver, and/or Photoshop.
- Demonstrated strong project management skills.
- Demonstrated experience in both graphic and web design.
EXPERIENCE, SKILLS & PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Experience with in a nonprofit, health-related or university-affiliated organization.
- Knowledge of the media, especially health and international affairs media, and experience with writing press releases.
- Knowledge of culture and politics in sub-Saharan Africa.
