SCOPE OF WORK:
This is an unpaid volunteer position.
The International Rescue Committee of Baltimore is a non-profit, non-sectarian refugee resettlement agency dedicated to working together with legally admitted refugees to assist them in rebuilding lives and reuniting families in the greater Baltimore area. A committed staff of professionals and volunteers provide essential resettlement services to refugee families including basic necessities, education, employment, social services and advocacy.
Family Mentors support newly-arrived refugee families and individuals by helping them adapt to life in the U.S., learn basic life skills and discover American culture. Mentors provide friendly encouragement as refugees become familiar with American and local customs, helping them become self-sufficient in their new home.
ESSENTIAL POSITION FUNCTIONS:
- Assist refugees in becoming familiar with the local community.
- Help refugees manage household affairs.
- Practice English and language skills.
- Other related activities according to need and interest.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Ability to interact with the refugee/s on a regular basis
- Interest in learning about the IRC, refugees, and cross-cultural communication
- Ability to communicate clearly and effectively in English; additional fluency in a refugee language beneficial
- Willingness to adhere to IRC volunteer and workplace policies
- A car/driver’s license is strongly preferred, but not required
TIME COMMITMENT:
Mentors must commit to a minimum of three hours per week for 6 months. Mentors will meet with refugees based on their individual schedules.
