SCOPE OF WORK:
This is an unpaid volunteer position.
The International Rescue Committee of Baltimore is a non-profit, non-sectarian refugee resettlement agency dedicated to working together with legally admitted refugees to assist them in rebuilding lives and reuniting families in the greater Baltimore area. A committed staff of professionals and volunteers provide essential resettlement services to refugee families including basic necessities, education, employment, social services and advocacy.
Employment Mentors support newly-arrived refugees as they begin their careers in the United States. Mentors work one-on-one with refugees to learn about employment in the United States, help them overcome barriers, and prepare them to begin their first job. Responsibilities include providing mentees with job search support, job leads and job search skills training. Mentors draw from their own job searches and work experiences while advising the mentee, and receive regular support and materials from the IRC employment team.
ESSENTIAL POSITION FUNCTIONS:
- Assist refugee in filing out job applications, resume development, job search techniques and job skills training.
- Provide orientation to the American work place.
- Provide support throughout job search, placement process, and post-placement.
- Maintain regular contact with employment team to communicate activities and progress.
- Make telephone calls to refugees and potential employers as needed.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Ability to meet and interact with refugee mentee on a regular basis with the assistance of an interpreter if needed
- A higher education degree is preferred but not required
- Employment and job search experience
- Willingness to adhere to IRC volunteer and workplace policies
TIME COMMITMENT:
Mentors must commit to a minimum of three hours per week for 3- 5 months. Mentors will meet with refugees based on their individual schedules.
