Reproductive Health Intern
SCOPE OF WORK:
This is an unpaid internship.
The International Rescue Committee of Baltimore is a non-profit, non-sectarian refugee resettlement agency dedicated to working together with legally admitted refugees to assist them in rebuilding lives and reuniting families in the greater Baltimore area. A committed staff of professionals and volunteers provide essential resettlement services to refugee families including basic necessities, education, employment, social services and advocacy.
PURPOSE: Health is a basic right for all refugees and health care is an essential component in the resettlement process in the United States. Refugee women have unique health needs including those involved in the prenatal and postpartum period. The Reproductive Health Intern will play the vital role of supporting the Pre/Postnatal Program Coordinator in working with pregnant refugee and asylee women on issues of prenatal/postpartum care, women's wellness (preventative care), family planning and newborn care while increasing access to additional information and resources.
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
Assisting the Pre/Postnatal Coordinator with providing prenatal and postpartum case management and support services in the IRC office, with local health providers and during home visits
Assisting in the planning, implementation and evaluation of culturally-appropriate prenatal and postpartum health education to be delivered in group and individual settings
Creating and maintaining a database of reproductive health resources, services and materials
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Experience in public health, health education, behavioral or social sciences, or related field
- Knowledge in topics related to prenatal/postpartum care, women's wellness (preventative care), family planning, newborn care and/or early childhood health and development
- Doulas, nurses and childbirth educators with experience in diverse populations are encouraged to apply
- Able to work independently and under pressure in a fast-paced environment
- Reliable and responsible for attending all appointments and meetings scheduled
- Willingness to transport clients to/from health-related appointments/events
- Organized with attention to detail
- Excellent communication and writing skills
- An interest in international and refugee issues
- Strong desire to help people and enthusiasm for working in a multi-cultural setting
- Computer literacy - preferably with PC systems
- A car/driver's license is beneficial
- Proficiency in a foreign language, including Arabic, Tigrinya, Amharic, Burmese, Chin or Nepali is beneficial but not required
