Position overview
The Laboratory Technician will provide technical services
and support to the Nursing and Midwifery team in the delivery of the Bachelor
of Nursing Science Program at the USC Gympie Campus.
The successful applicant will be based primarily at the
Gympie campus, but will be required to travel to the Sippy Downs Campus to
contribute to School activities.
Duties can include:
Provide laboratory and technical support for the delivery of
clinical teaching sessions in the Nursing Laboratory at undergraduate and
postgraduate level, including:
Liaising with teaching staff to clarify laboratory and
facility requirements for clinical teaching sessions
Revision and review of protocols for clinical teaching
sessions (Standard Operating Procedures and Equipment Instructions)
Setting up equipment for teaching sessions, cleaning and
replacing on conclusion of the session
Identifying, reporting and, if appropriate, solving problems
in laboratory procedures
Providing assistance to staff and students in the
installation, operation, maintenance, transport and storage of equipment
Maintaining laboratory and facility bookings and equipment
hire
Monitor safety activities within the teaching and research
laboratories, including:
Implementing and maintaining waste management and disposal
systems
Overseeing the appropriate storage and use of teaching
equipment
Monitoring the appropriate use of personal protective
equipment
Documenting, filing and reporting of accidents, injuries and
near misses
Undertake record and monitor risk assessments in Haznet for
the preparation and clean up of practical classes and assist course
coordinators with risk assessments for tutorials/practical classes.
Implement cleaning and maintenance schedules for equipment,
instruments and computer hygiene within the laboratories.
Perform stock control activities including:
Identifying stock required within the teaching laboratories
Consulting with teaching and research staff and advising the
Discipline Leader of items that fall outside standard ordering activities
Maintenance of equipment calibration and inventory
databases, and
Assisting with stock takes
Participate in and assist with the University Open Day,
information sessions, and demonstrations for schools or other organizations.
Other duties within the range of skills normally associated
with a position of this classification in an evolving environment as required
by the School of Nursing and Midwifery.
Selection criteria
Essential
Completion of a relevant Associate Diploma, or an equivalent
combination of relevant experience and education/training.
Previous experience supporting a broad range of clinical
teaching activities.
Working knowledge of policies, guidelines and legislation relevant
to laboratory technical services including occupational health and safety
requirements and familiarity with laboratory waste systems.
Previous experience in performing, documenting and
implementing outcomes of risk assessments in a laboratory environment.
Sound problem solving and analytical skills relevant to
clinical teaching in nursing and midwifery.
Relevant experience in the operation of Microsoft Office
software and applications in a networked environment.
Sound interpersonal skills including the ability to:
communicate effectively both verbally and in writing
operate effectively both as a member of a team and
independently
work under minimal supervision in a high volume work
environment
use initiative in adapting to new situations, and
manage self and time effectively
Possession of a First Aid Certificate.
Desirable
Possession of a current class ‘C’ Drivers Licence.
Nursing experience.
