Conservation International's marine climate change program provides the technical foundation for addressing
climate change throughout CIs marine programs. In addition to providing strategic and technical support across the institution, the program directly supports field activities, such as vulnerability assessments and adaptation planning and implementation. Further, through the marine climate change program Conservation International (CI) is partnering to lead an international consortium that focuses on the conservation and management of coastal systems for their carbon sequestration and storage capacity. The consortium is implementing the International Blue Carbon Initiative (http://thebluecarboninitiative.org/), which integrates targeted science, policy, and economics of coastal 'blue' carbon through working groups, pilot projects, international policy, and capacity building.

This position will work closely with the Senior Director, Strategic Marine Initiatives, to support the long-term growth and success of CI's marine climate change program. The position will be responsible for the day to day management of the blue carbon and marine adaptation programs, including project development, implementation, research, communications and broader capacity building. The position will be responsible for building and maintaining a strong network of climate change, conservation and related experts to support the work of CI and its partners. The position will be the technical point-person for supporting the field programs on marine climate change issues. The position will coordinate with the Seascapes program, Moore Center for Science, Center for Environment and Peace, other CI divisions and external partners to ensure successful completion and maximum integration of marine climate change activities at CI.

RESPONSIBILITIES:


  • Under the supervision of the Senior Director, Strategic Marine Initiatives , the position will be responsible for:
  •     Working with CI field programs to develop and implement Vulnerability Assessment projects and adaptation activities,
  •     building CI internal capacity on marine climate change and adaptation development and implementation of broader Vulnerability Assessment Capacity Building program including development of relevant training materials,
  •     Ongoing development of CIs methodologies and approaches to climate change vulnerability assessment and adaptation,
  •     Maintaining close working relationships with and regularly liaise with the other marine program, Moore Center, other CI divisions and external partners to ensure successful completion and maximum integration of marine climate change activities at CI,
  •     Providing fundraising support to the marine climate change program, marine division and field programs including writing proposals for a broad variety of funding sources.
  • In addition the position will be responsible for day-to-day management of the International Blue Carbon Initiative activities, including:
  •     Cordinating the International Blue Carbon Scientific And Policy Working groups, including organizing meetings and workshops, supporting completion of working group products, leading development and dissemination of communication products,
  •     Maintaining and updating the Blue Carbon Initiative website,
  •     Supporting CI field programs in fundraising, design and implementation of Blue Carbon projects,
    Developing and maintaining a network of Blue Carbon partners and experts.

    This position is based in CI Headquarters in Arlington, VA

QUALIFICATIONS:

Required:


  •     Bachelor's degree in marine, climate change or related field
  •     3-5 years of relevant work experience
  •     Knowledge of climate change impacts on the ocean and marine biodiversity
  •     Strong organizational and financial management skills
  •     Proven ability to engage and collaborate with diverse teams and individuals across various disciplines, cultures and backgrounds to achieve shared goals
  •     Ability to work well independently and coordinate teams remotely.
  •     Ability to deliver results while managing competing priorities under tight deadlines
  •     Outstanding written and spoken communication skills.
  •     Experience writing for broad variety of audiences, including academic, media, web blogs, funding proposals.

Preferred:

    Graduate degree in marine science, climate change or related field highly preferred
    Fluency in written and spoken Spanish and/or Portuguese
    Website design and maintenance experience
