Scope of work:
The English for Speakers of Other Languages Instructor is responsible for developing lesson plans and providing instruction for leading groups of 20 to 60 refugee clients to develop basic communicative competency through a curriculum that focuses on survival skills in order to develop literacy. The instructor must be able to successfully tailor curriculum and materials to the specific needs of newly arrived refugees whose immediate goal is to become self-sufficient in a new community. This is a short-term, reduced schedule (20 hours/week), non-exempt position with a regular schedule currently Monday through Thursday, 9:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. The anticipated length of this temporary assignment is approximately 15 weeks (from July 1, 2013 through October 10, 2013) with the possibility of an extension based on program needs and coverage. This position reports to the Education & Learning Manager.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Plan basic literacy and ESOL lessons tailored to recently resettled refugee clients with limited English proficiency.
- Provide daily English language instruction to groups of 20 - 60 students of diverse ethnic, literacy, and educational backgrounds.
- Provide instruction to clients utilizing materials and topics found in IRC-Atlanta's ESOL class syllabus
- Contribute and update instructional materials and lessons.
- Monitor, record, and assess individual student attendance and progress through attendance rolls, entrance and exit exams and observation of students in mock work and living situations.
- Maintain case notes on student progress in client files.
- Work along with the Education & Learning Manager to compile monthly data and produce narrative reports to meet reporting requirements.
- Plan, in conjunction with IRC-Atlanta program staff, enrichment field trips introducing and practicing life skills.
Report regularly to the Education & Learning Manager on program activities and progress and maintain on-going communication with the other team members as needed to monitor attendance and progress of students.
REQUIREMENTS:
- B.A. degree (4-year) desirable, preferably in TESL, Education, or Social Sciences.
- Completion of a certificate program in TEFL, TESL, or TESOL, highly desirable.
- Minimum of one (1) year experience teaching adults, preferably ESOL, in the U.S. or overseas.
- Prior experience working with low-income refugees or immigrants preferred
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook)
- Flexibility, creativity, initiative and ability to work independently
- Comfortable working in a multicultural environment
- Able to attend occasional daytime meetings outside of scheduled classroom hour.
