Organizational Setting and Reporting

This position is located in the Investments Section in the Investment Management Division of the United Nations Joint Staff Pension Fund. The incumbent reports to the Senior Investment Officer.

Responsibilities

  • Under the overall supervision of the Senior Investment Officer for Real Assets the incumbent is responsible for:
  •     Assisting the Senior Investment Officer and Investment Officer in managing the Real Assets of the Fund's portfolio which consists of real estate, Infrastructure, agriculture and timber which includes approximately 65 active funds and a five individual publically traded real estate security positions.
  •     Monitoring the implementation of orders (cash-movement) for draw-down, management fees and other cash payment purposes to individual fund managers. Must also control and log incoming cash in the form of income, return of capital, return on capital and fee rebates etc.
  •     Monitoring individual fund positions; compiling and processing economic, market and fund-specific data and to gather research data on Real Asset investment markets.
  •     At the discretion of the Senior Investment Officer, must also be prepared to perform any other functions relating to trading, research (such as, retrieving current and historical data from various electronic data bases provided by outside sources through computer linkage; i.e., MSCI, Bloomberg, Northern Trust Passport, individual fund websites etc.), Use of Wilshire, ABACUS, MS Excel, PowerPoint and MS Word essential.
  •     Assisting the Senior Investment Officer and Investment Officers in interviewing prospective managers and investments. Ability to respond to queries by prospective and existing fund managers as well as the Advisor. Help prepare recommendations for buy/sell transactions and addition of new funds to the Approved List.
  •     Assisting the Senior Investment Officer and Investment officers, and working with the Advisor, to prepare quarterly, annual and ad-hoc reports on Real Assets for the Pension Board, Investments Committee, and other organs of the UN.
  •     Must also stay abreast of global economic, market and political developments; attend meetings with individual fund managers (Annual fund meetings, Advisory Board meetings or conference calls). Coordinate with Fund's Real Asset Advisor (Townsend Group) as directed by SIO; to brief, train, or supervise and co-ordinate the work of other Investment Management Assistants and interns at IMD as directed.
  •     Work with Operations and Accounting to verify that all Real Asset Fund's quarterly capital statements are properly recorded and reconciled.
  •     Maintain archive of investment files, investment reports and other records pertinent to Real Asset investments. Handle all administrative matters within the Real Assets Group. Is responsible to maintain both physical and electronic files and data bases.

Education
High school diploma or equivalent. Must have passed the United Nations Administrative Support Assessment Test (ASAT) at Headquarters or an equivalent locally-administered test at Offices Away.

Work Experience

Ten years of experience in the financial markets. Experience in commercial real estate and privately held investments is required. Exposure to capital markets and international work experience is desirable. Prior experience in investment management is also desirable. Qualifying years of experience are calculated following the receipt of the high school or secondary school diploma.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the UN Secretariat. For this position, fluency in English, (both oral and written) is required; knowledge of the other is desirable. Knowledge of another UN official language is an advantage.

Assessment Method
Evaluation of qualified applicants may include a substantive assessment followed by a competency-based interview.
