OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAMME :
In parallel with the research programmes of IARC,
devoted to studies in cancer etiology and prevention, the Agency issues a
Scientific Publications series, the IARC Monographs series, the WHO
Classification of Tumours series, an IARC Handbooks series, Technical
Publications, and Annual Reports, which make current knowledge and research
results in this field available to the international scientific and public
health communities. These activities fall within the responsibility of the
Communications Group (COM), which reports directly to the Director's Office.
Description of duties:
Within the Communications Group (COM), the
incumbent is responsible for the assembly, editing, and proofreading of
scientific manuscripts in English for IARC publications. The incumbent reports
to the Editor (English language) under the general supervision of the COM Group
Head. The incumbent cooperates and works closely with all COM publications
staff, including the Publishing Assistant, Editor (English language), and
Knowledge Manager, who work together as a team. The incumbent works on all IARC
publications, with the highest priority given to the WHO Classification of
Tumours series (50% of total time, on average), for which guidance is provided
by the Head, Section of Molecular Pathology (MPA). The main objective of the
work is to ensure the timely production of accurate, well-written, and
scientifically informative publications.
The incumbent will undertake the following duties:
1) Perform scientific and technical editing of
manuscripts for IARC publications, ensuring correctness of language, scientific
clarity, and conformity with house style; publications include the WHO
Classification of Tumours series (WHO Blue Books), as well as IARC Scientific
Publications, IARC Monographs, IARC Handbooks, Technical Publications, Biennial
Reports, and Interim Annual Reports.
2) Assemble manuscripts and illustrations, and
create subject indexes for books, as needed.
3) Check layouts and proofread proofs for IARC
publications.
4) Edit manuscripts drafted by IARC scientists
for publication in scientific journals or books, for grant proposals, or for
inclusion in official documents, as necessary.
5) Assist in developing and maintaining
terminology and style sheets, author guidelines, standards and procedures
documents, with responsibility for the accuracy and clarity of this
documentation.
6) Edit materials prepared by scientific as well
as non-scientific staff at the Agency, for dissemination on the IARC website,
as electronic publications, and in other forms.
7) Assist with scientific consensus and editorial
meetings to assemble, revise, and correct documents, as needed.
8) Perform any other related duties assigned by
the supervisor.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Education:
Essential: University degree in English or in one of the
biological/biomedical sciences.
Desirable: University degree or specialized training in
scientific editing, including recognized professional credentials as an
English-language editor.
Skills:
Essential: General knowledge of the natural sciences,
biochemistry, biology, and medicine.
Desirable: Familiarity with the terminology of molecular
pathology, molecular biology, and genetics.
Training in editorial and publishing activities.
Proven ability to edit and present technical scientific
information in a clear, simple, and effective manner.
Excellent interpersonal skills and oral
communications skills.
Ability to produce and deliver high-quality
results in a timely manner.
Computer literacy, competency in MS Office suite,
and knowledge of other software applications related to editing and publishing
procedures. Required WHO competencies:

4) Respecting and promoting individual and
cultural differences.
Experience:
Essential: At least two years of professional experience in
scientific and/or biomedical editing, working in a wide range of media and
formats.
Desirable: Experience in both scholarly publishing and a
news or multimedia environment. Some experience in a scientific position,
including experience at the international level.
Languages:
Essential: English mother tongue.
Desirable: working knowledge of French.
Additional Information:
Candidates called for interview may be expected
to give a seminar or sit a written test.
The mentioned annual salary rates can be subject
to slight variations as they include components (post adjustment, exchange
rate) that are reviewed on a monthly basis.

Annual salary: (Net of tax) 59,168 euros at single rate
